39. Returning To Petersburg High Life

Anna Karénine - Tome I — Résumé 🇺🇸 English

Upon returning to Saint Petersburg, Wronsky goes to the apartment on the Morskaïa that he previously lent to his close friend, Lieutenant Petritzky. Finding the rooms already lively, he walks in to discover Baroness Shilton making coffee while Petritzky and Captain Kamerowsky keep her company. The baroness chatters away in her usual Parisian jargon, playfully teasing the men, complaining about her husband refusing to grant a divorce, and asking Wronsky for advice on her financial disputes. Wronsky easily slips back into his old social habits, amused by the lighthearted chatter and banter. After the baroness and Kamerowsky leave, Petritzky catches Wronsky up on his chaotic personal life while Wronsky gets ready. Petritzky details his overwhelming financial troubles, including angry tailors, an unforgiving colonel, and his complicated relationships. Wronsky listens and responds with the familiar, carefree attitude of his old Petersburg circle. He even shares a hearty laugh upon hearing an absurd story about their fellow officer Bousoulkof accidentally carrying pounds of sweets hidden inside his ceremonial helmet during a royal inspection. Refreshed by the familiar atmosphere and gossip of his old life, Wronsky finishes dressing in his uniform and leaves the apartment. He heads out to visit the Place, his brother, and Princess Betsy, planning a full round of visits. His goal is to reestablish his presence in high society and navigate the specific social circles frequented by Karenina.
