Summary : Fleurs de Paris

At the sound of the knocks, Georges turns pale with sudden horror and dread, while Lise is overwhelmed by a chilling sense of impending doom. In a brief moment of anxiety, she mentally recalls her past: her adoption by the kind country couple the Frémonts, her peaceful upbringing, their move to Paris with sixty thousand francs of savings to serve as her dowry, and the fateful winter evening when she saved the bleeding stranger who later won her heart.
