12. The Burden Of The Tyrant

God Emperor Of Dune — Résumé 🇺🇸 English

The chapter opens with an excerpt from The Stolen Journals reflecting on conscience and heredity. Following this, the Inquisitors of Ix assemble in the Grand Palais to interview Hwi Noree, the candidate for Ambassador to the Court of the Lord Leto. During the proceedings, the Inquisitors question her regarding her views on the motives behind the Lord Leto accepting his hideous transformation into a worm-body and the subsequent loss of his humanity. Hwi Noree rejects the notion that he did it merely for power and long life, arguing instead that such a desperate sacrifice was made because he foresaw something in the future that only he could prevent. When the Inquisitors challenge her by suggesting she makes the tyrant appear as a selfless servant of the people, Hwi Noree points to both Atreides family characteristics and oral history. The discussion turns to the character of the tyrant Worm, and Hwi Noree references her Uncle Malky to explain various facets of his behavior. She recounts how her uncle viewed the Lord Leto as possessing great tolerance for selected companions, while noting that he executes others due to clumsy threats or pretensions, particularly those historians whose works lied about the past. Furthermore, Hwi Noree discusses her uncle Malky assessments of the Lord Leto as an artful diplomat, a master conversationalist, and a figure who was ultimately civilized despite being capable of brutality. She explains that her uncle believed the Lord Leto lacked innocence and naiveté, and that he delighted in the surprising genius and diversity of humankind. According to Malky, the Lord Leto constantly seeks newness and originality while remaining wary of their destructive potential. As the interrogation concludes, Hwi Noree expresses regret for potentially wasting the time of the Inquisitors. They assure her that her time has not been wasted and officially confirm her appointment as Ambassador to the Court of Lord Leto, the God Emperor of the known universe.
