Nayla climbs the long circular stairs toward the God Emperor’s audience chamber in the Citadel’s south tower. Her steady, precise progress is observed by Leto through an Ixian device projecting her image in his chambers. Leto reflects on her unwavering devotion, her legendary physical strength, and her origins as a Fish Speaker. He recalls presenting her with a true crysknife from Sietch Tabr, using the ancient weapon and ritual to bind her loyalty firmly to his service, even as he internally despises the religious fanaticism that his own rule has engendered.
Upon reaching the chamber, Nayla stands before Leto in total subservience. Leto tests her faith by loudly denouncing the religion built around his person as a holy obscenity, but Nayla’s absolute adoration remains entirely unshaken. When Leto questions her about Topri, a clumsy spy within the rebel ranks, Nayla accurately dismisses him. The conversation then turns to Siona, the leader of the rebels. Nayla notes that Siona is strong and survived the wolves, but remains ultimately driven by hatred.
Leto questions Nayla regarding the Citadel charts stolen by Siona. Nayla reveals that Siona believes a massive hoard of melange lies beneath the Citadel and intends to use Ixian tools to reach it. When Leto confirms that a catastrophic defense protects the spice, Nayla shudders and instinctively vows not to let Siona attempt the theft. Leto immediately checks her, reminding her of his strict command to obey Siona in all things and protect her life with her own.
Nayla experiences a momentary crisis of faith before rationalizing Leto's conflicting commands as the ultimate test of her devotion. Reassured by her absolute obedience and touching her concealed crysknife, Nayla accepts the directive and flees the presence of her God. Leto reflects on the predictability imposed by weapons and blind loyalty, satisfied that Nayla has provided the vital information he needed and that Siona has finally reached the explosive moment required for his Golden Path.
