21. Reflections of the God Emperor

God Emperor Of Dune — Résumé 🇺🇸 English

Sister Chenoeh of the Bene Gesserit records a clandestine encounter with the God Emperor, Leto, during a brief journey across the landscape. Bound by both her religious training and the emperor's strict commands, she conceals her notes from her superiors. During their run, Chenoeh questions the Lord Leto about his likeness to a Reverend Mother and the origins of his access to ancestral memories. Leto explains that he and his twin sister, Ghanima, were awakened in the womb through a combination of genetic history and spice. When Chenoeh labels this condition Abomination, Leto acknowledges the danger of overwhelming ancestral voices, revealing that the pharaonic model of government helped them form internal alliances to manage the vast horde of memories. Emboldened by his unusual willingness to converse, Chenoeh asks why he confronts his critics regarding his tyrannical rule. In response, Leto instructs her to record his thoughts as if she were writing in one of his personal journals, wishing to preserve his true motives from historical distortion. He describes himself not as a leader, but as a god who transcends conventional morality and responsibility. He warns Chenoeh about the dangers of seeking truth, explaining that words and myths often obscure reality and can be manipulated by tyrants to control the masses. Leto asserts that the only enduring past lies wordlessly within an individual, and he notes that his extensive collection of historical facts remains entirely malleable in his hands. As their journey nears its end, Chenoeh asks if Leto's assertion that he will never see her again implies his own impending death. Leto laughs and corrects her, prophesying instead that she will die before attaining the status of Reverend Mother, though her role today will immortalize her within his growing mythos. Despite the terrifying nature of his words, Chenoeh experiences a sudden and profound bond of friendship with the God Emperor, realizing momentarily the meaning of his wordless truth. An archivist's closing note reveals that Sister Chenoeh indeed died years later during her attempt to become a Reverend Mother due to melange incompatibility, rendering her private record a historical footnote.
