45. Summoned Into The Presence

God Emperor Of Dune — Résumé 🇺🇸 English

Duncan Idaho finds himself consumed by a growing crisis of purpose after being effortlessly overpowered by Moneo earlier in the day. Sitting in his quarters, he feels reduced to a mere biological vessel, which breeds a bitter blend of apathy and frustration. The arrival of a young Fish Speaker messenger interrupts his brooding, bearing a summons from Moneo. Although initially tempted to ignore it, curiosity and a powerful, inexplicable pull toward Lady Hwi compel Idaho to make his way to Moneo's high-ceilinged workroom. Upon entering, Idaho finds Hwi already seated beside a table covered in a chaotic array of papers, plan drawings, and illegal computer printouts. Moneo welcomes them with an uncharacteristic, vulnerable candor, admitting that his aggressive behavior earlier that morning was wrong and unjustified. This rare display of honesty shifts the dynamic in the room, making Idaho feel as though the three of them are the last true humans in a desolate universe. Moneo confirms that both Siona and the God Emperor Leto are currently away undergoing a dangerous testing process. The conversation deepens as Moneo and Idaho discuss the nature of Leto's totalitarian rule and his personal transformation. Moneo recounts his own past as a rebellious opponent of the God Emperor, explaining how Leto forced him to confront a staggering, horrifying vision of the future. This revelation leaves Moneo in tears, grateful that he only has to follow rather than bear the immense burden of Leto's ultimate decisions. Hwi, who has also physically touched the God Emperor, expresses a profound, intuitive understanding of the heavy sacrifices Leto has made. As the meeting progresses, Moneo delivers the God Emperor's decree that Idaho and Hwi must permanently separate and never see each other again. Despite their mutual affection and Hwi's gentle attempts to calm him, Idaho reacts with bitter defiance and explosive rage, condemning Leto's tyranny. Overwhelmed by frustration and despair, Idaho abruptly storms out of the room. Hwi sorrowfully accepts the separation, and Moneo warns her that their forbidden love only contributes further to Idaho's impending destruction. Returning to his quarters through the quiet corridors, Idaho passes Nayla, who cryptically tells him she is no longer a friend before walking away. Left alone in his room, Idaho is struck by the crushing realization that he possesses no ties to any era, feeling diminished and entirely detached from his past. He recognizes that his outburst has likely alienated Hwi, pushing her away from her love for him. He reflects on Moneo's absolute devotion to duty and responsibility, realizing that such steadfast submission is a luxury belonging entirely to another lifetime.
