In the gloomy center of a crypt nearly at midnight, the God Emperor Leto confronts his majordomo, Moneo, who trembles before him. Moneo has taken the independent step of sending people to Tuono without consulting Leto first, an action that prompts the God Emperor to explore Moneo's deep-seated anxieties about power, faith, and the nature of existence. Leto diagnoses Moneo's rigid reliance on reason and his inability to accept a universe that simply exists without constant judgment. As their conversation unfolds, Leto reflects on the distant past when Arrakis was a planet-wide desert, noting that the old wind known as the sandblaster has vanished after thousands of years while soil and water transformed the landscape.
Their dialogue shifts to the impending wedding and the growing unease among the Fish Speakers regarding Leto's marriage to Hwi. Moneo admits he sent the Duncan away to help manage the brewing unrest, noting that Hwi perceives the tensions within the ranks. Leto praises Hwi's unique insight and criticizes Moneo for taking pieces out of the continuum and refusing to grasp the broader vision of the Golden Path. When Moneo laments his lack of the God Emperor's evolved powers and knowledge, Leto angrily denounces the fragility of civilizations whose powers outrun their religions, though he soon softens his tone and consoles the exhausted majordomo.
The God Emperor then announces a significant change regarding the upcoming wedding ceremony. Instead of using the water rings belonging to his sister Ghanima, Leto instructs Moneo to retrieve the rings of their mother, the Lady Chani, from her tomb in the earliest burial niches of the Atreides on Arrakis. When Moneo hesitates and questions whether disturbing the tomb constitutes a desecration, Leto speaks briefly in Chani's voice to assert his ownership over the relics. Finally, as Moneo prepares to carry out the task at Tabur Village, Leto abruptly changes his mind and declares that the wedding will take place at Tuono Village instead.
