In March 1865, a ferocious hurricane sweeps across the Pacific Ocean, carrying a large gas balloon caught within its violent rotating vortex. Inside the hanging basket, five passengers remain trapped in total darkness and dense fog, unable to see the sea or land beneath them. As the storm rages on, the balloon is rapidly losing altitude, and the terrified travelers are forced to throw out all their heavy equipment, weapons, and provisions to keep themselves afloat in the upper atmosphere. By the next day, the tempest begins to subside, but the balloon continues to deflate slowly as gas escapes through a tear in the fabric. With no land in sight across the endless expanse of water, the passengers make the desperate decision to cut away the wicker basket entirely, clinging desperately to the netting above while throwing out their last remaining gold coins. Relieved of this weight, the balloon briefly surges upward before resuming its inevitable descent toward the towering waves. Just as all hope seems lost, a loyal dog named Top barks, and one of the passengers spots a high stretch of land in the distance. The wind drives the battered aerostat toward the coast, where a final massive wave crashes against the netting and throws the balloon back into the air just enough to reach solid ground. Four of the travelers scramble onto the sandy shore, while the missing fifth passenger is swept away by the sea, leaving the survivors deeply concerned for their lost companion. The four stranded men are revealed to be daring war prisoners who escaped from Richmond, Virginia, during the American Civil War on March twentieth. Cyrus Smith, a brilliant and courageous engineer from Massachusetts, had been captured by Confederate forces along with Gideon Spilett, an adventurous reporter for the New York Herald. They were later joined in the city by Nab, Smith's devoted former slave, as well as a sailor named Pencroff and a fifteen-year-old boy named Harbert Brown. Together, they had seized a captive balloon on a stormy night to break out of the besieged city.
