Traveling across the Red Desert alongside her father King Silas and the spymaster Serin, Lara is forced to endure the irritating remarks of the spymaster. During their journey, she calmly explains to her astonished companions that she poisoned all the soup spoons except the king's to ensure she would be chosen. King Silas is highly amused by her calculated ruthlessness, recognizing that her daring gamble was necessary to trick their enemies into believing she was the sole survivor.
As the group approaches the capital city of Vencia, the arid dunes gradually transform into green hills, rugged mountains, and flowing rivers. Along the way, Lara is deeply moved by the sight of starving Maridrinian citizens and children who line the roads to cheer for her, praising her as a martyr who sacrificed her family. These impoverished people suffer immensely under the crushing trade taxes imposed by Ithicana and its vital bridge. Witnessing their plight strengthens Lara's resolve to exact vengeance. During camp stops, Serin forces Lara to learn a complex secret code created by the late Marylyn, explaining that she must hide her encoded messages within the official correspondence sent by King Aren to maintain communication with her homeland.
Upon reaching the outskirts of Vencia, King Silas presents Lara with ceremonial daggers equipped with hidden throwing blades, acknowledging her elite combat training and warning her about the brutal and merciless nature of the Ithicanians and their king.
