4.Modeste Mignon
In October 1829, notary Simon Babylas Latournelle walks up from Le Havre to Ingouville with his family and clerk Jean Butscha, orchestrating a secretive plan regarding the young Modeste Mignon. The group heads to the Chalet, a charming, brightly colored cottage that serves as the home for Modeste, her blind mother, and Monsieur Dumay, a fierce former soldier who acts as their devoted cashier. The Chalet itself is a source of bitter fury for the wealthy neighbor Monsieur Vilquin, who bought the surrounding Mignon estate but failed to evict Dumay and his tenants, sparking an ongoing local feud driven by Dumay's stubborn loyalty.
Inside the Chalet, a tense atmosphere unfolds as the family and their acquaintances gather for an ordinary evening of whist. The young banker Gobenheim sits impassively, focused solely on calculation and routine, completely unaware of the dramatic undercurrents in the room. Meanwhile, Madame Mignon sits silently in blindness, and Dumay anxiously hides loaded pistols on the mantelpiece, consumed by a fierce protectiveness over Modeste. The assembled group watches Modeste with intense, trembling scrutiny as she quietly embarks on her embroidery, completely oblivious to the elaborate trap and the emotional stakes surrounding her.
