3.The Sleeping Youth Of The Valley
The text opens in a lush green valley where a river sings and catches silver rags in the grass while the proud mountain sun shines brightly. A young soldier with an open mouth and bare head sleeps peacefully with his neck bathing in fresh blue cress. He is stretched out in the grass under the open sky looking pale in his green bed where light rains down. His feet rest among gladioli and he sleeps with the smile of a sick child taking a nap.
The speaker calls upon nature to cradle him warmly because he is cold. The fragrances do not make his nostrils shudder as he sleeps in the sunlight with his hand resting quietly upon his chest. A closer look reveals a devastating reality as he has two red holes in his right side.
