Victor, an inspector from the Brigade mondaine, unexpectedly spots a stunning, mysterious woman with reddish hair at the Ciné-Balthazar. Just as he resolves to follow her, a frantic short man named Alphonse Audigrand creates a massive disturbance, screaming that a woman in black has stolen from him. Victor trails Audigrand and ultimately escorts him to a police station, where Audigrand confesses that he is a bank employee from Strasbourg who lost an envelope containing nearly one million francs in National Defense Bonds to a woman named Ernestine.
Following this lead, Victor tracks down Ernestine, a typist at a chemical company, who admits she found the yellow envelope on the floor. She reveals that another employee, Madame Chassain, likely witnessed where she hid it before departing for Saint-Cloud. Victor intercepts Madame Chassain at the train station. Although a search of her belongings yields nothing, Victor deduces that she must have passed the stolen envelope to an accomplice during her commute.
Through careful surveillance over the following days, Victor and Principal Inspector Hédouin identify Madame Chassain's associate as a reclusive man named Lescot, who lives in a pavilion named La Bicoque near Garches. Late at night, the officers approach the property and hear a gunshot inside. They storm the building to find Lescot shot dead. Victor catches a glimpse of the mysterious red-haired woman escaping through a window, while Hédouin is wounded in a confrontation with the fleeing killer, leaving Victor to ponder the identity of the dangerous new culprit.
