5. Solitary Reflections Through The Wall

L'Enfer — Résumé 🇺🇸 English

Trapped in the deep shadows of his room in a quiet boarding house, the narrator spends his time waiting in the silence. Exploring the empty corridors, he observes minor scenes of daily life involving other residents, including a servant and a young girl. He catches a fleeting glimpse of an elegant, unknown lady who enters a salon and leaves him with a profound sense of melancholy and desire. Realising that human life holds a sudden, divine truth, he returns to his room as evening approaches and listens to the sounds of the building. A noise from the adjoining room draws his attention to the partition wall, where he discovers he can peer through a fissure into the identical adjacent chamber. He watches an unknown young woman enter the room and approach the window in the twilight. Captivated by her presence, he hungrily observes her every movement as she prepares for the evening. When she builds a fire in the hearth, the flickering light illuminates her silhouette, revealing her delicate features, hair, and clothing in vivid detail. He feeds on the sight of her body, torn between a desperate urge to cross the barrier and touch her and the paralyzing fear of social ruin and consequences. As the evening progresses, the woman moves around the room, undressing by the light of the fire and eventually the lamp. The narrator experiences an overwhelming storm of desire and longing, viewing her as an embodiment of pure, unattainable womanhood separated from him only by a wall. He recognizes that her absolute solitude and the physical barrier are essential to the intensity of his experience, realizing that true possession lies in the preservation of this distance and yearning. She remains completely unaware of his invasive gaze, yet their eyes meet momentarily in a shared acknowledgment. The following day, the woman departs from the house. The narrator catches a final glimpse of her descending the stairs in a pearl-grey dress, looking as elegant and distant as when she first arrived. She leaves the building without ever truly noticing him, vanishing into her own uncertain destiny. Left alone in his desolate room once more, the narrator is overwhelmed by a deep sense of loss and emptiness, knowing he will never see her again, yet forever changed by the unforgettable evening they shared across the divide.
