Résumé
Chương 4
In autumn 1840, in Upsal, Sweden, the distinguished student Hede was confronted by his friend, Gösta Olin.
Olin, a stout man from a tenant family, overcame his embarrassment to deliver serious news. He revealed that Hede was neglecting his studies, spending all his time playing the violin, and that his family’s estate, Munkyttan, was facing financial ruin. The once-profitable iron mine was exhausted, and agriculture alone couldn't sustain them. Hede’s mother was secretly struggling, borrowing money, and concealing the truth, hoping he would pass his exams before the estate had to be sold.
Hede initially reacted with annoyance and disbelief, but eventually accepted the grim reality, thanking Olin and promising to focus on his studies. However, Olin insisted Hede couldn't work while possessing his violin, demanding to borrow it. He confessed a second motive: he had seen Hede's fiancée and pitied her, vowing she wouldn't spend her life waiting for an idle man. Realizing Olin's unspoken affection for his fiancée and his selfless act, Hede, deeply moved, reluctantly surrendered his beloved instrument.
Deprived of his violin, Hede attempted to study but quickly succumbed to despair. The thought of losing Munkyttan terrified him, and without his music, he felt unable to think or calm his agitated mind, growing increasingly furious with Olin. Suddenly, a blind old street musician began playing in the courtyard. Desperate for sound, Hede slid down a vine to beg the old man for his violin. The blind man didn’t understand, so Hede pleaded with his young guide, Ingrid. Ingrid, with her serious gaze, assessed Hede, then handed him the instrument, requesting a "Freischutz Waltz."
As Hede played the humble violin, his heart lightened. The music spoke to him, reminding him of his strength and capacity to fight for his home. A small crowd gathered, including the old acrobats, Mr. Blomgren and his wife, Miss Viola. Captivated by Hede's passionate playing, the Blomgrens danced with renewed youthful vigor, inspiring applause and even a rare smile from Ingrid. Hede experienced a revelation: his music possessed a magical power to enchant people. He envisioned a new path as a professional musician, studying abroad, and earning "money and glory" with his art, a far better option than academic studies to save Munkyttan.
Hede spent hours with the Blomgrens, who shared their story of being passionate circus artists cast out by a director but devoted to their art. Mr. Blomgren highlighted Ingrid's beautiful eyes, lamenting her lack of artistic talent and her refusal to abandon her blind grandfather for a wealthier life. They confessed to keeping the grandfather only for Ingrid's sake, hoping to nurture her into an artist, even though she believed her inability to perform made her "worthless."
Moved, Hede passionately defended Ingrid, condemning the idea of exposing her to a cruel public. He argued that true artistry lies in bringing happiness to another. He declared Ingrid's devotion would be reserved for one person who would offer her a protective home, speaking as much for his own burgeoning fear of leaving his quiet life. The Blomgrens, touched by his invocation of fidelity and love, promised to let Ingrid choose her own destiny. Hede returned home, recognizing his adventure's sole meaning: to spare a sad child from sorrow over her perceived inadequacy.
