3.The Purpose And Introduction Of Les Misérables
The preface written at Hauteville House in eighteen sixty-two introduces the fundamental philosophy governing the novel. The author asserts that books of this nature remain necessary as long as societal laws and customs create artificial hells and human suffering persists. The text highlights three primary problems of the century that demand solutions, namely the degradation of man through pauperism, the corruption of woman through hunger, and the crippling of children through a lack of light. Ultimately, it argues that until ignorance and poverty are completely eradicated from the earth, such literature will continue to serve a vital purpose in addressing human suffering and social injustice.
The narrative then shifts to the year eighteen fifteen and introduces M Charles-François-Bienvenu Myriel, who serves as the Bishop of D. At roughly seventy-five years of age, he has occupied the see since eighteen hundred and four. Various rumors and stories have circulated about his early life ever since his arrival in the diocese. Born into a parliamentary family belonging to the bar nobility, his father originally destined him for a political career and arranged an early marriage. During this period, he was considered well formed, elegant, and devoted to social life and gallantry. When the French Revolution erupted, his family was dispersed and he emigrated to Italy, where his wife sadly died of a chest malady without leaving any children.
Following the profound upheavals and tragic spectacles of the Revolution, M Myriel underwent a radical transformation and returned to France as a consecrated priest. By eighteen hundred and four, he was serving as the quiet and retired Curé of Brignolles. While visiting Paris to solicit assistance for his struggling parishioners, he managed to attract the attention of the Emperor Napoleon during a chance encounter in an anteroom. Impressed by a witty and respectful exchange between them, Napoleon subsequently appointed him as the Bishop of D. Despite initial local gossip and petty rumors surrounding his background, these stories eventually faded into complete oblivion over nine years of dedicated episcopal residence.
Upon settling into the episcopal palace, M Myriel lives alongside two women who comprise his modest household. His sister, Mademoiselle Baptistine, is an elderly spinster ten years his junior who possesses a gentle disposition, a transparent appearance, and a life defined by holy deeds. Their sole domestic is Madame Magloire, a bustling and asthmatic old woman who acts as maid to Mademoiselle and housekeeper to the bishop. Following his formal installation and official visits with local dignitaries, the town eagerly waits to observe their new bishop as he begins his official duties.
